Using a learn-by-doing approach, FOSI Quickstart tutorials show how to
make the most of Arbortext Editor's FOSI formatting language and its no-extra-
cost interfaces for FOSI development and maintenance.
The FOSI Quickstart Tutorials are not at all like skim-the-surface free
tutorials that are available for some languages ("This is the definition of a
counter. Here is a simple example of using a counter. This is the definition of
a string variable. Here is a simple example of using a string variable."), which
leave it to you to figure out how to make everything work together. Who has
time for that?
The FOSI Quickstart Tutorials take the opposite approach. They are
designed to demonstrate how all the pieces work together, including
Preference settings and environment variables that affect FOSI formatting.
Common error conditions and messages are also covered.
The tutorials are designed so you can experiment on your own before
moving on to the next tutorial. Each tutorial has its own XML file and FOSI. To
make the most of your valuable time, many tutorial FOSIs are already partially
or fully coded.
To help you hit the ground running, the tutorials are packed with dozens of
valuable tips related to FOSI and Arbortext project development, and the FOSI
stylesheets contain lots of working code you can use and build on for your
own FOSIs.
All of which make the FOSI Quickstart Tutorials an ongoing resource.
To meet the needs of those who just need a FOSI for Edit window display and
for those who need a FOSI for print/PDF output, the FOSI Quickstart
Tutorials are divided into two Parts:
- FOSI Quickstart Tutorials for Screen FOSIs (Part 1), which cover
formatting that applies to both the Arbortext Edit window and print/PDF
output. The tutorials teach the use of the style panels FOSI interface and
the tagged FOSI interface, and how to use each to best advantage. Order
these tutorials if you only need to develop screen FOSIs to format
the Arbortext Editor Edit window display and do not have a
requirement for print/PDF output. [17 tutorials, 129-page workbook]
- FOSI Quickstart Tutorials for Print FOSIs (Part 1 and Part 2). Part 1
covers formatting that applies to borh the Arbortext Edit window and
print/PDF output, and Part 2 covers formatting that applies only to
print/PDF output. Order these tutorials if you need to develop FOSIs
for print/PDf as well as FOSIs for display in the Arbortext Editor Edit
window. [Part 1: 17 tutorials, 129-page workbook; Part 2: 28 tutorials, 150-
page workbook]

Part 1 covers FOSI formatting that applies to both screen and print FOSIs, and explores the two FOSI interfaces, as described above. Since Part 1 tutorials cover the FOSI interfaces, most Part 2 tutorials provide starter FOSIs with most or all of the code already in place -- your role is to experiment with the possibilities.
